WHAT DO YOU VALUE MOST?
Imagine witnessing a miracle and asking the Miracle Worker to leave. That’s exactly what happens in Mark 5.
A man who had terrorized the community is completely transformed. Families no longer have to fear him, and children no longer have to avoid him. Freedom has come to someone everyone thought was beyond hope.
But the crowd isn’t celebrating. Instead, they’re counting pigs. The loss of the herd represented a significant economic cost. What Jesus restored in a person, they measured against what they lost financially.
Before we’re too hard on them, we should ask ourselves an uncomfortable question: How often do we do the same thing?
We say we want Jesus to transform our lives until transformation starts costing us something.
We want deeper faith until it requires surrender.
We want healthier relationships until they require forgiveness.
We want spiritual growth until it disrupts our comfort.
Our culture is obsessed with convenience, but Jesus reminds us that people matter more than possessions.
C.S. Lewis famously wrote, “You have never talked to a mere mortal.”
Every person you pass at work, every teenager at the local In-N-Out, every neighbor across the street carries eternal significance.
Now the healed man wants to go with Jesus, but Jesus gives him another assignment: “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you.”
Sometimes we believe we need more knowledge before God can use us. But this man didn’t have a theology degree or years of discipleship training. All he had was a story. A testimony of God’s goodness in his life. “I was lost, and Jesus found me.”
And that’s often how God works. He takes ordinary people who have experienced extraordinary grace and uses them to point others to Christ.
Your story may not be dramatic by worldly standards. Maybe Jesus rescued you from self-righteousness instead of addiction. Maybe He saved you from despair instead of public scandal. Every rescue is evidence of grace.
The world needs more people who are willing to tell what Jesus has done.
Final Thought: Your testimony may be the doorway someone walks through to meet Jesus.
