WE ARE GOD’S CHILDREN
To read today: Romans 8:12-17, 1 John 2
The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.
Romans 8:16
Romans 8, verse 16, is fascinating because Paul shares that the Holy Spirit “testifies” or “affirms” with our spirit that we are God’s children. As believers, we are made aware that the Holy Spirit communicates directly and personally with us. The Holy Spirit gives us inner testimony affirming that you and I are one of God’s children. As His children, we no longer need to live in fear of being controlled by our old self; we have instead been made new in Christ. And we are not alone – His Spirit is with us. This means we do not need to lean on our strength but lean on His instead. It is in His strength that we can live and love like Jesus.
In 1 John 2:6, the apostle John shares that followers of Christ are to live “as Jesus lived.” But if Jesus was perfect and we are sinful, how then can we live as Jesus lived? Both Paul and John explain that we cannot do this in our strength, but rather it is the Spirit in us that continues to guide and strengthen us. And, by His Spirit, we have His love for others and His eyes to truly see those around us. By His Spirit, we find the strength to flee from temptation. By His Spirit, we can endure the hardships and difficult circumstances we face this side of heaven. By His Spirit, we boldly proclaim the good news of Christ. We know by His Spirit that we are His children as His Spirit testifies with ours.
Final Thought: For today: Take a moment to think about what it means that the Spirit testifies with your spirit. Rely on His strength today, not yours.
