Unity Offers Healing
As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
Ephesians 4:1-6
The apostle Paul shares in this passage that there is “one body and one Spirit.” Paul focuses our attention on the truth that there is a singular church – not a divided one. In fact, he uses the word “one” in verse seven times in verse 6 alone to describe the various aspects of our faith.
I find it refreshing and peaceful to know that there is only one option for each of these. We do not have to take the mental and emotional energy of trying to choose between them. In contrast, the various opinions and debates in the world today – even in the church – are exhausting. They stress us out and divide the church. I am thankful that unity in the body brings peace, healing, and restoration.
Today, thank the Lord for His calming presence in our lives. Thank Him for giving us His truth and the gift of unity — one body and one Spirit in our church.
Lord, may we be individuals and a church body known for both our conviction and compassion. May we be known for our love and our unity.
