Unity Offers Joy

This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them.

Acts 6:5-6

It’s amazing to see that the plan to take care of all the widows in need “pleased the whole group.” I was curious as I read this passage if there were some who did not like or did not agree with their proposal. Instead, we see that the decision to take care of everyone in need brought the church together. These days, it is rare to see decisions made that please everyone. I think what brought them satisfaction was the shared desire to do good by taking care of those in need. It infuses joy!

Recently, I had the opportunity to watch our Tuesday morning Fresh Market in action.  My 7-year-old daughter, Mary, joined us where she took on the role of handing out flowers to those who wanted them and, because it was Mary, even those who didn’t want them! Her smile and personality were infectious. She brought joy to both those going through to get their needed food items and she brought joy to those serving. Experiencing the pure joy of a child showing love to others breathed life into those around her. It was a unifying experience.

Serving others is always a unifying experience and it offers everyone joy in return. There are many ways to serve at church, within our local community, and around the world. I encourage you to take the next step with your time and talents to love others.
