THE WOMAN AT THE WELL
To read today: John 4:1-29
The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
John 4:15 NIV

The story of the woman at the well is my favorite story in all of Scripture. I find no story to be more powerful or beautiful than this. A Samaritan woman is the first person Jesus tells that HE is the Messiah, the Son of God. Samaritans were seen as second-class citizens, and women were devalued. She was an adulterer, below both subclasses, yet Jesus still chose to use her first. That is the God we serve. He is a God of the lowly, the broken, the downcast, the poor, the disabled, and the discarded. Jesus saw her for everything she was and could be and not for everything the world told her she lacked. Jesus did not choose her by accident. Her story is perfectly placed to teach followers of Jesus that they are not invisible to a loving and graceful God. Shocked by the truth of His words and exposure of her sin, her eyes open to the truth of who He is. Through this statement, He shows her that His word is true. Finally, we see Jesus revealed as the Messiah, and there is a power and majesty worthy to behold. Her story reminds us that He alone is the living water that can fill our void. Our sin or our status does not deter Him. He is our Savior and our King, and our life should overflow as an exaltation of His name and the gift we have been given in our salvation.
Reflection: Do you see Jesus as the living water flowing out for you? Thank Jesus for using imperfect people like us to accomplish His perfect will.
