THE VOICE ABOVE EVERY OTHER VOICE
The Father speaks only a few times in the Gospels. Interesting, isn’t it? So when He does, we should pay attention.
“This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to Him.”
Not Moses.
Not Elijah.
Not the crowd.
Not culture.
Not your fears.
Not your feelings.
Jesus.
The command seems simple until we realize how many competing voices fight for our attention. Every day we are being discipled by something. Social media disciples us. News cycles disciple us. Our anxieties disciple us. Our desires disciple us. The question isn’t whether we’re being shaped. The question is who is shaping us.
In the first century, many Jews revered Moses as the giver of the Law and Elijah as one of the greatest prophets. But the Father makes it clear that Jesus is not merely another voice in the conversation. He is the final Word.
Hebrews 1 tells us that while God spoke through the prophets in the past, He has now spoken through His Son. This matters because sin has a way of making every other voice sound more trustworthy than God’s. We listen to shame when Jesus says, “Forgiven.” We listen to fear when Jesus says, “Trust Me.” We listen to the world when Jesus says, “Follow Me.”
The gospel is not simply the announcement that Jesus died for sinners; it is also the invitation to submit every part of our lives to His authority.
What does it mean to “listen to Jesus”?
To listen to Jesus is to trust that He knows better than we do.
To listen to Jesus is to believe that His commands are for our good.
To listen to Jesus is to surrender the illusion that we are wiser than God.
As C.S. Lewis once wrote, “There are only two kinds of people: those who say to God, ‘Thy will be done,’ and those to whom God says, in the end, ‘Thy will be done.'”
Every day, we are faced with that choice. Whose voice will shape your life?
Final Thought: Turn down the volume of the world and tune your heart to Christ.
