THE TRAP OF FLASE FREEDOM

The Son Who Ran Away To Find “Freedom” Became A Slave

Look at this tragic reversal. The son left home because he wanted freedom. He didn’t want to live under his father’s authority. Now he is trapped under the authority of a stranger. He wanted independence. Now he is fully dependent. He wanted excess.

Now he is empty. He wanted freedom. Now he serves a strange master.

This is the progression Jesus wants us to see clearly. Sin tries to paint God as restrictive. “He’s holding you back.” “You should be able to do whatever you want.” “Freedom means nobody can tell you what to do.” Jesus offers us a very different picture of freedom. Freedom isn’t doing whatever you want. It’s trusting the Father and avoiding what can entangle us.

Everyone has a master. Sometimes we imagine there are only two options: Serve God or be completely free. But Jesus shows us that this is a lie. Something will shape your decisions. Something will define what matters. Something will tell you who you are. Something will demand your loyalty.

The question isn’t whether you will serve someone or no one. The question is who you will serve. The son rejects his father’s authority, even though his father loves him. Instead, he finds himself under the authority of someone who doesn’t love him.

This is the tragedy of sin. We trade the loving authority of God for masters who do not love us back.

Next Step:

Ask yourself: What has more control over me than it should? Approval? Achievement? Comfort? Money? Desire? Entertainment? Image? Fear? Success? None of these things deserves the throne of your life. Only the Father does.

This passage ends in a pigpen, but the story doesn’t. The son ran away, squandered everything, faced famine and need, and became enslaved. Yet his road home remains open. This is the hope of the gospel. No matter how far you’ve wandered, you are never beyond the Father’s reach.
