THE SAVIOR WE NEEDED, NOT THE SAVIOR WE EXPECTED

So…the disciples are still trying to make sense of everything they have seen. If Elijah was supposed to come first, why does the story seem so different from what they expected?

Jesus’ answer reveals a pattern found throughout Scripture: God keeps His promises, but often in ways that surprise us. Our expectations of how God should work often fail to align with how He actually works.

The people expected a conquering King, but God sent a suffering Servant.

They expected political liberation, but God provided spiritual redemption.

They expected immediate triumph, but God accomplished eternal salvation.

The problem wasn’t that God’s promises failed. The problem was that people loved their expectations more than God’s plan. If we’re honest, we do the same thing.

We often want a Jesus who blesses our ambitions, protects our comfort, and affirms our preferences. Yet the real Jesus is far more holy and far more loving than the version we would create.

The Jesus of Scripture confronts our sin before He comforts our wounds.

He calls us to repentance before He calls us to influence.

He offers us Himself before He offers us anything else.

This is why the gospel is such good news. Left to ourselves, we would have chosen the wrong Savior. We would have settled for temporary solutions to eternal problems. But God, in His mercy, sent the Savior we needed.

God’s love is not proven by giving us everything we want. God’s love is proven in giving us Christ. And Christ is enough. More than enough. He is the fulfillment of every promise, the answer to every longing, and the center of every page of Scripture. The story was always about Him. It is all about Him. And by grace, our story now is too.

Final Thought: Trust God’s Savior over your expectations; His ways are always better than your own.
