To read today:  Exodus 32, 1 Thessalonians 4:9-12

Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life.

1 Thessalonians 4:11

Is it possible to live a quiet life these days? The noise of this world can get really loud. Today, there are so many things to get distracted by that make it difficult to follow the apostle Paul’s exhortation to live a quiet life. Hypothetically, what would life look like if we didn’t have the internet, social media, cell phones, streaming television, and divisive elections? What if we had candidates everyone loved and respected, and it was only hard to choose because they were just so amazing? It seems like this would make some things in life easier today – and maybe it would be. Yet, when I look back at the Israelites in the desert with very little to distract them, they were still quite capable of whining and complaining to Aaron and interfering with what God was doing. Instead of minding their own business and focusing on what they needed to do, they interfered repeatedly with what God was trying to accomplish in their lives. They were whining and complaining about what they didn’t have rather than thanking the Lord for what they did. If they had paid more attention to how God had been moving in their lives and the faithful leadership of Moses and Aaron, they would have fared better.

Final Thought: Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God.” While there are many things worthy of our time and attention, remember that He is on the throne and Lord over all. He is your rock and your peace today.
