David becomes king over all of Israel and after years of running, hiding, fighting, and praying, you may think he would like to take a well-earned break. Who could blame him for wanting to take a few months to settle in and catch his breath? According to 2 Samuel 5, that is not what David does. He immediately musters the army and marches on Jerusalem, the great city that has not been conquered for hundreds of years. In a remarkable move, he uses the water shaft into the city to win an unexpected victory and sets up his throne in Jerusalem. This move proves pivotal to his reign, as “…he became more and more powerful, because the Lord God Almighty was with him” (2 Samuel 5:10). Later in his life, David will lapse into the luxury and ease of palace life and show a willingness and eagerness to serve and be faithful to his call.
As we close out this week thinking about waiting on the Lord, being in transition, and stepping into new opportunities, remember that as a servant of God, our assignment is never done. While it is good and God-honoring to take breaks and celebrate the seasons we have gone through, we (like David) are not given the option of kicking back and enjoying the comforts of success. God expects us to use whatever He has given us – our time, talents, treasure, influence, and gifts – to accomplish His purpose in this world and fulfill His call on your life. Whether you have just finished school, gotten a big promotion, sent your last child off to college, or retired from work – God’s call on your life is to use this new season of life to honor Him and serve His people. This lifelong call only ends when God calls us home to eternal rest with Him!
For Today: Ask God for clarity on your call in this season of your life.
