The More Excellent Way of Love
And yet I will show you the most excellent way.
1 Corinthians 12:31b
Have you ever read a cliffhanger? A book that leaves you in suspense, hungry for the complete picture? Do not fret; when Paul says he will show you a more excellent way, he is happy to fill in the blanks. In fact, this is the last verse before one of the most well-known passages in scripture: 1 Corinthians 13, “love verses.” If you’re thinking, “oh yeah! I’ve been to a wedding before and heard about them!” you probably have! Lucky for us, this more excellent way of love is not just for newlyweds. The “more excellent way” is the larger concentric circle that encompasses all the spiritual gifts.
Without love exhibited through a devoted, self-sacrificial posture toward God and his people, these supernatural gifts might as well be null and void. It causes us to ask ourselves, am I treating the supernatural, spirit-filled abilities as true presents to give away to others so they may know God more? Or have I been concerned with my own reputation or aptitude? Brothers and sisters, you are so loved by our Father who gave the gift to us that we could never package ourselves: the sacrifice of Jesus. We have the privilege of partnering with the Lord in His desire to bring people close to him once again and see His Kingdom in all its glory and wholeness come to earth today. Let’s start with love.
Today’s action step: Take time to sit with the Lord and reflect on the Gospel of God’s love for you and those around you. Then, read 1 Corinthians 13. What attributes of love can you ask the Lord to help you embody today so you can be a representation of Jesus to the world around you?
