The Highest Prayer

For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives,  so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God,  being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience.

Colossians 1:9-11

It is clearly an overarching principle that our precious Lord encourages us to pray about anything and everything – all the time and without hesitation.  Let’s examine a Biblical concept that should help us refine our prayer life and create in us an attitude of humility, submission, and acceptance.

Note with care how Paul prays for the Church at Colossae – in verse 9, he says that his most important prayer is that the people be filled with the knowledge of God’s will and spiritual understanding.  THAT is the Highest Prayer we can pray. When we simply seek to know God’s will in all situations, we are placing ourselves under His control, His authority, and His perspective.  Now, note that the first 2 words of verse 10 are “so that” indicating that what follows is a result of what has preceded. Paul is telling us that our prayers for the outcomes listed in verses 10 and 11 should be the results of the prayer in verse 9.

The most important answer we should desire in our prayer life is to know and understand the will of God. Paul is teaching us to seek that first – then living a worthy life, pleasing Him, bearing fruit, being strengthened, having endurance, and possessing patience will follow. Romans 12:1-2 tells us that we are to present our bodies and renew our minds with one goal in front of us – find the perfect will of God!!

Ask God to help you always seek His will first and foremost in whatever circumstance you are in.
