THE FAR COUNTRY
Sin Always Wants Distance From The Father
Notice that the younger son in this story doesn’t just want his father’s possessions—he wants a life in which his father has no say. So, he leaves. The “far country” is about more than geography. It represents the desire to build a life away from the Father’s presence, authority, and influence. That remains one of sin’s fundamental impulses. We probably don’t consciously think, I want to get away from God. More likely, our thoughts sound like:
“I want to do what I want to do.”
“I just don’t want God tinkering around in this part of my life.”
“I know what the Bible says, but…”
“I’ll come back to God later once I get it out of my system.”
The far country begins wherever we choose to want God’s gifts without God’s authority.
Next Step:
Ask yourself honestly: “Where am I creating distance between myself and God?”
Maybe you’re avoiding prayer because you know what God is going to lovingly confront you about. Maybe there’s an area of your relationships, finances, ambitions, entertainment, or attitude that you’ve quietly labeled “off limits” to Him.
Don’t wait until you’re miles away to realize you’ve been moving in the wrong direction. Pay attention to the direction of your heart today. Identify one area of your life where you’ve kept God at a distance. Bring it honestly before Him in prayer and invite Him back into that area of your life.
