The Destination

Philip, however, appeared at Azotus and traveled about, preaching the gospel in all the towns until he reached Caesarea.

Acts 8: 40

This verse is the perfect end cap to our week of exploring the passage in Acts 8. We conclude with Philip reaching his destination. An interesting perspective to ponder may be the language front-loading the verse. He follows the lead of the Holy Spirit usurping every opportunity to preach the gospel. Azotus is named on the journey but the description has a snowballing effect with “all the towns until….” There is momentum in Philip’s ministry; an unsettling energy that propels him forward.

It is wonderful to have a vision and a destination to aim for when we are aligned with the will of the Father. Philip did not have tunnel vision but savored every opportunity along the way to spread the good news of Jesus. We cannot do this in our own strength; it is not manufactured by us but is an invitation from the Holy Spirit.

For instance, some of us may be more reserved than others and therefore find it challenging to create opportunities for the gospel to be shared. How about something as simple as a chat in the grocery store or helping a neighbor? Philip allowed the Holy Spirit to build on his ministry and we can also gain increasing confidence the more we exercise our unique way of relating to those around us. We are a tapestry of believers!

Lord, please illuminate the journey of this life so we can share the gospel along the way to our destination, which is a perfect life with You in eternity.
