SUFFERING FOR CHRIST
To read today: Romans 8:12-17, Acts 7
Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
Romans 8:17
Paul concludes his thought here in Romans 8:12-17 by stating that Christians are God’s children and His heirs. Through the work of Jesus Christ on the cross for our sins, we have the unconditional promise of one day being in His presence. We are co-heirs with Christ if we sincerely share in Christ’s suffering and sacrifice. Many suffer around the globe daily for the cause of sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. For those who share in Christ’s suffering, God promises that they will also “share in His glory.”
In Foxe’s Book of Martyrs, we can read dozens of stories about followers of Christ who literally gave their life for the sake of Christ. We can also find several examples in the early church throughout the book of Acts. The stoning of Stephen in Acts chapter 7 grieves me every time I read it. Stephen gives one of the most eloquent, heartfelt messages about the good news of Jesus Christ. The response of those listening was anger to the point of killing him right there on the spot by hurling rocks at him. I’ve been teased, even mocked, for following Jesus. I’ve had people ignore the good news of Jesus when I’ve shared. I’ve even experienced people who took offense to the gospel. I’ve never had anyone try to kill me for it. But I do know we have missionaries that Calvary supports who live in harm’s way every single day for the cause of Christ.
Final Thought: For today: Pray the Lord helps you be bold, slow down, and be available to those He needs. Let’s also lift up those around the globe who are suffering for the cause of Christ.
