Devotional written by Pastor Curtis Johnson, Pastor of Adult Ministries
For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.
1 John 2:16
Lust is a temptation and an evil that overcomes many of us. It is born of Satan and the flesh. Every single one of us is subject to lust, and if we are to overcome it, we must be strong.
How can we keep our desire for love and sexual pleasure from deceiving us? My Study Bible suggests points for consideration: 1) You must decide what kind of person you will love before passion takes over. Determine whether a person’s character and faith in God are as desirable as their physical appearance. 2) Because most of the time you spend with your spouse will not involve sex, your companion’s personality, temperament, and commitment to solving problems must be as gratifying as their kisses. 3) Be patient; the second look often reveals what is beneath the pleasant appearance and attentive touch.
Reflection: The world is driven by the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. In contrast, God values self-control, a spirit of generosity, and a commitment to humble service. Go to God in prayer and ask Him to search your heart to help you overcome lust and pride in your heart and life.
