Ordained Moments of Ministry
How can I, ”he said,”unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.
Acts 8: 31
It is interesting that the Ethiopian eunuch answered the question from yesterday (“Do you understand what you are reading?” v30) with a question. An interpretation of this passage could be construed as a terse exchange, but I believe we need to look beyond the words spoken here. Philip responded to a ministry opportunity; a divine appointment so clearly orchestrated by God. He had the discernment and courage to walk into the moment, trusting the Holy Spirit would speak through him.
Humility and compassion add another layer to the scene when the eunuch invites Philip to “come up and sit with him” v31. Philip set aside any preconceived notions of social or cultural barriers and, in turn, accepted the invitation to be an instrument of the gospel message.
I’m sure there are moments in your life when you have found yourself in a seemingly impromptu moment where someone is asking you questions that lead to sharing the good news of Jesus. I pray that in the moments when I have felt less than adequate and on the back foot, the Lord would give me the words and grace to minister. I believe an authentic life in Christ will draw the hearts of those who are questioning, even if few words are exchanged or in my case, they aren’t as eloquent as I would desire.
May I encourage you to ask the Holy Spirit to equip you with the discernment to look deeper than the words? As we move into God’s vision for our future, will you be on the lookout for unique opportunities to minister to others? A chariot may not be in your future, but you never know!
