OBEDIENCE DOESN’T ALWAYS FEEL REWARDING

We often mistakenly assume that trusting and obeying God automatically removes hardship from our lives. When pain or difficulties arise, voices around us often suggest that we are somehow responsible for our struggles and disappointments. After all, if you truly obey God, your life should be successful, peaceful, and free from trouble. Have you heard something like that before? Probably more than once.

But God completely shatters this lie through the truth of His Word, bringing it directly into our hearts.

In the story of Joseph in Genesis 37:13–17, we see his complete obedience to his father. There are no objections or arguments—only a willing acceptance of his father’s request to undertake a long, dangerous journey to check on his brothers.

Joseph does exactly what he is supposed to do. He obeys his father, and that obedience leads him through suffering before blessing.

In this story, Joseph’s brothers violently seize him and eventually sell him into slavery. One can imagine that later, Joseph must have remembered that day many times—how, after obeying his father, he searched diligently for his brothers, refusing to give up even after many failed attempts. He remained obedient to his father to the very end—and it was precisely that obedience that led him into a place of betrayal.

Joseph’s suffering did not begin because of sinful choices or rebellion against God, but in the midst of faithfulness. His obedience brought him pain, yet God would later use him to save his family and many nations from a devastating famine.

Fifteen years ago, my wife and I walked through a season when our obedience to God led to the loss of almost everything we had spent years building. At the time, it felt deeply painful and unfair. We asked God many questions and struggled to understand why following Him had led us into such a difficult place. Yet during that season, God began working deeply in our hearts. Over time, we saw that what once looked like destruction became the beginning of a new and blessed chapter, one we never would have chosen for ourselves, yet for which we are deeply grateful today.

Joseph’s story ultimately points us to Jesus Christ. Jesus was fully obedient to the Father, and that obedience led Him to the cross. Yet through His obedience, salvation came to the world.

Today, obedience may seem ordinary, yet it still costs us dearly:

  • Staying honest even when dishonesty would benefit us.
  • Forgiving someone when the pain remains real.
  • Remaining faithful in family or ministry when there seems to be little return.
  • Trusting God even when we do not understand what He is doing

Small acts of obedience often become part of a much larger story God is writing.

Obedience to God is not about comfort. Jesus called it the narrow path—not the easiest road, but the one that leads to life.

Prayer: Jesus, help me trust You, even when obedience is difficult and painful. Give me a heart that remains faithful to You no matter what.
