Mordecai – A Man
of Assurance
Scripture to read today:
For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place…
Esther 4:14a
Have you ever been in a difficult situation that seems to have no possible solution? It’s one thing to be in a tough spot and have options. Complete panic doesn’t take over because you, in your human mind and understanding of things, can come up with some possible ways out. But when you can’t even think of a way to get out or when there isn’t any foreseeable relief in sight, that is what can drive people to desperate acts.
Mordecai and his people were in one of those situations. Yes, Esther was poised to help them, but would she? If I were Mordecai, I would have said something like, “Listen, Lady, you’re our only hope. So if you don’t do this, we’re all dead. There’s no other way out of this one.” Instead, Mordecai says something that shines with trust in his Deliverer. He tells her that if she doesn’t talk to the king, “deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place.”
He reveals his trust in God’s hand on His people. How could he do this? He knew God’s track record. He remembered God’s faithfulness to His people, saving them from slavery in Egypt and bringing them to the promised land. He could tell of the miracles God used to do that, and of the way God made them into a great nation among the nations. And he could recall the promise of God that He would make them a nation again. In this dark time, he may have been scared, but he trusted in God’s deliverance.
Do you have the assurance that God will care for you? As you live to honor and please Him, do you trust that your God has your back? That he will “never leave you nor forsake you?” If you are new to following Jesus, this can be hard because you haven’t been in the habit of reviewing God’s “track record” in your life. Nevertheless, you can rely on the Bible, which is full of examples that show God’s faithfulness to those who follow Him. Build these examples into your thinking and wait for examples of God’s faithfulness in your own life. It will not be long before you have your own list of ways God has delivered and led you.
For those who have been following Jesus for a long time, it can still be easy to be anxious in the face of terrible circumstances. But like Mordecai, you have a list of your own personal examples of how God has guided you throughout your life. Don’t forget His faithfulness! Remind yourself of them often and when a seemingly insurmountable situation presents itself, you can say that deliverance will arise. God has you in His trustworthy hands, and He will never let you go!
Psalm 119:90: “Your faithfulness continues throughout all generations; You established the earth, and it stands.”
Suggestion: Make a list of all of the examples in your life so far of God’s faithfulness to you. These can be big or small. Keep it handy so you can remind yourself by his past faithfulness that he will be with you in your present circumstances.
