MERCY: Yield to Love

Augustine famously said, “Love, and do what you will.” That can sound dangerous until you understand what he meant. A heart that is shaped by love for God wants what God wants.

Jesus said the greatest commandments are to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind and to love our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:37–40). As we grow in loving God and others, everything else begins falling into place in our relationships.

Look again at Paul’s list of virtues from verse 12.

Compassion is love that notices someone else’s pain.
Kindness is love that takes action.
Humility is love willing to put someone else ahead of itself (Philippians 2:3).
Gentleness is love being careful with its words and its strength.
Patience is love giving people room to grow—even when they aren’t growing at the pace we would prefer!

And then Paul says, “over all these virtues put on love.” Love holds everything together.

Notice where the verse ends: unity. We often want unity without doing the hard work of love. But real unity in a marriage, family, friendship, small group, or church doesn’t come from everyone agreeing or behaving perfectly. It comes when people who have received the love and mercy of Jesus choose to give that same love and mercy to one another. That’s a habit worth building in every household!

Final Thought: Yield to the love of Jesus today. Let His love shape every word, every action, and every reaction. You are loved!
