Memorizing Scripture

I’m sure I’m not the only person who has gotten a song stuck in my head after hearing it on repeat. It’s funny how our brains catch on quickly when we hear something again and again. Memorizing Scripture can be like this too. We can memorize Scripture by forming simple habits in our lives. When we memorize God’s Word, we are putting truth in our hearts that can carry us throughout our lives.

As the Children’s Pastor, I’ve watched children memorize Scripture in some very creative ways. On Sunday mornings in Children’s Ministry, we have shouted verses, whispered them, added motions, written them out, and even turned them into songs. We can learn so much from children. They tend not to worry about whether they are doing it perfectly. They just repeat it again and again until it sticks.

Psalm 119:11 says, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” It’s pretty awesome that God’s Word is something we can carry inside us, not just something that sits on our nightstand.

Memorizing Scripture is actually challenging for me. I’ve tried many different ways, such as reading a verse over and over again, making flashcards, and highlighting the verse in my Bible. I have found that writing a verse on a sticky note and placing it on my bathroom mirror works best for me. Others may find that a different approach works better for them.

I want to challenge you to choose one verse to memorize this week. Here are a few simple steps to help you get started.

1. Pick one verse. Start with a verse that is meaningful to you.
2. Write it out. Post it somewhere you will see it every day.
3. Read it out loud. Read it slowly, then say it again.
4. Break it down. Learn one part at a time.
5. Repeat it daily. Try saying it while you are driving, cooking dinner, or walking the dog.
6. Cover it up. Cover a portion of the verse and see if you can fill in the missing words.

You don’t have to get it perfectly right away. Keep practicing and let the words sink in. May the verse you memorize this week be one that encourages you and guides you.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us Your Word. Help us make Scripture a part of our everyday lives. Give us the passion and patience to memorize Your truth, and help us remember it when we need encouragement, courage, or direction. May Your Word change the way we think, speak, and live. In Your name I pray, Amen.
