LOVING YOUR GRANDCHILDREN THROUGH LISTENING

…be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger…

James 1:19

Listen to your children.  Often, children feel they cannot approach their parents with requests regarding their own children or family plans. So, be approachable. You have made many sacrifices for your children, but that doesn’t mean you have “served your time” or that it’s time for payback. This is a great opportunity to show humility and wisdom. Being a godly grandparent means you consider your children’s concerns and feelings. Do as today’s key verse states, and be quick to hear and slow to speak.

Being a grandparent is an exciting call from God. Many grandparents have said that if they knew how fun grandchildren would be, they’d have skipped the kids and gone straight to the grandkids! Have fun with your grandkids, and go make memories. Share wisdom and serve the Lord alongside them.  When they are struggling, listen and be a strong, godly example to them.

Reflection: This week, read these five Proverbs about listening:  Proverbs 12:15, Proverbs 18:13, Proverbs 19:27, Proverbs 18:2, and Proverbs 19:20. Ask yourself how you can use listening as a tool to build a stronger relationship with your children and grandchildren and help them feel heard and understood.
