Loss

Scripture to read today:  Job 2

Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Hebrews 4:16

The story of Job is usually among the first that comes to mind whenever we experience loss. Job’s loss began with his possessions, then struck his family, and finally attacked his health. When we find him in Job 2, he is sitting in a pile of ashes scraping his body with a piece of pottery. He goes on to tell us he curses the day he was born (3:1). He proceeds to describe life as darkness and deep shadow (3:5). He calls it a night without dawn (3:9). He wishes he had died at birth (3:11). He longs for a death that does not come (3:21). Job’s overwhelming losses had taken him to a very deep black hole.

When it comes to our great loss, no amount of talk, explanation, or consultation ever seems to satisfy others or us. Yet, Hebrews 4:14-16 gives us the promise that since we have a great high priest in Jesus Christ who can empathize with our weaknesses, we can hold firmly to the faith we profess. When we approach Jesus, we will receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Do you have a loss you need to talk through and process with God?
