LOOKING FOR HELP IN ALL THE WRONG PLACES
When We Feel Empty, Our Instinct Is Often To Run To Another Substitute
The son finally recognizes that he is in deep need. That realization could have sent him home right then and there… But it doesn’t. Instead of returning to his father, he clings to someone new in the far country. Isn’t this painfully relatable?
Sometimes we realize something in our lives isn’t working, but instead of returning to God, we simply seek a new or different version of the same thing. Lonely? Find another relationship. Insecure? Chase more approval. Unfulfilled? Work harder. Anxious? Distract yourself. Empty? Consume something. If we’re not careful, we may try to satisfy our spiritual hunger with worldly treats.
Need can either drive us toward God or deeper into self-reliance. There’s nothing wrong with recognizing a need and taking a responsible next step. The problem is believing we can fix the deep problems of our souls without the Father himself.
The younger son still seems determined to make life work on his own. That same instinct lives in us. “I can fix this.” “I can manage this.” “I can get myself out.” But Christianity begins with a very different confession: I need God.
Jesus didn’t come just to give better advice to people who were already doing well. He came to rescue people who are drowning.
Next Step:
Pay attention today to what you reach for when you feel uncomfortable. When you feel lonely, stressed, insecure, bored, rejected, or afraid, where do you turn first? Your phone? Food? Entertainment? Work? Another person? Your own ability to control the situation?
These things may not even be sinful, but they make terrible saviors. Practice making God your first response, not your last resort. The next time you feel stress, loneliness, insecurity, or temptation, pause before reaching for your usual escape. Pray first: “Father, I need You.”
