Let the Little Children Come

But Jesus called the children to him and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”

Luke 18: 16-17

We know the story well. The one where Jesus rebukes people who try to block the children from access to Him by reminding them the Kingdom of God belongs to children like them. Jesus was dramatically counter-cultural when he chose to value children and honor them. He not only permitted them to be close to Him but used them as examples for others to follow. God often uses the ones we least expect, like children, to powerfully call others to the truth of the Gospel.

Children today are still often dismissed. Middle school and high school students, even more so! We as parents and as a society have often collectively written off the next generation as having nothing much to offer us. My friends, that is simply untrue. Now is the time to check our bias and our arrogance towards this next generation and listen closely to what they have to teach us.

If we are humble and willing to listen, we can learn fresh perspectives and precious truths from our children, grandchildren, friends, neighbors, and students. Of course, we also have a responsibility to shepherd and guide with the wisdom we have gleaned through the years. But as we engage with the next generation, let us be careful to listen with an open mind and heart. We want to be people who are eager for God to teach and shape us through anyone, especially those whom we least expect.
