Let Me Tell You a Story
He said to the Israelites, “In the future when your descendants ask their parents, ‘What do these stones mean?’ tell them, ‘Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’”
Joshua 4: 21-22
Have you ever noticed that the older a person gets the better they become at storytelling? I spoke to Pastor Dick Thompson, our Seasoned Adults Ministry Pastor, about this phenomenon once. I wondered why it was that an older adult is more inclined to sit and share a story of yesteryear. He helped me understand that the more life lived, the more there is to share! The wisdom and the care and the mess and beauty of a life’s journey mean more lessons to be taught. The older we get the more we tend to delight in reminiscing on memories that impacted our lives because we can see in the rearview mirror just how much it impacted us.
Imagine if we became intentional about sharing the ways in which God authored OUR story with the next generation. The Bible is so rich with story after story of God’s faithfulness but so are our lives! I would love for all of us to become more aware of ways in which we can remind the next generation of the faithfulness of God in our lives. When you look back at your story how can you see God moving? Shifting? Shaping you? Share those stories with your family and young friends. Remind them that God is just as invested in their journey as He was in the journey of the people in the Bible. God is weaving together something beautiful in each person. It is our job to tell the tales of the grace of God in our lives so that the next generation bears witness to that truth in their lives.
