It’s All About Jesus – September 19, 2023

Tuesday, September 19th

Devotional written by Pastor Jason McMaster, Executive Pastor

To read today: John 1:1-5; Colossians 1:15-18

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was with God in the beginning.

John 1:1-2

In 1995, the worship song “Above All” was partially written by Paul Baloche.  The story goes that Paul was alone in his church, sitting at his piano. He reflected on the greatness of his God and the sacrifice Jesus made for everyone.  The words flowed out of him, but he was not completely satisfied. Paul brought the rough draft to a friend, Lenny LeBlanc, who helped him complete the song. Michael W. Smith later helped to produce the song and played it at President Bush’s inaugural prayer service in 2001. The song was later nominated for Song of the Year in 2002, and that year, Baloche received a Dove Award for Songwriter of the Year.

The song reads:

Above all powers

Above all kings

Above all nature and all created things

Above all wisdom and all the ways of man

You were here before the world began

Above all kingdoms

Above all thrones

Above all wonders the world has ever known

Above all wealth and treasures of the earth

There’s no way to measure what You’re worth

Laid behind the stone

You lived to die

Rejected and alone

Like a rose trampled on the ground

You took the fall

And thought of me

Above all

Final Thought:  John Chapter 1 explains that in the beginning was the Word: Jesus.   Jesus was (and is) God—Jesus was with God in the beginning.  Through Jesus, everything was made. Ultimately, Jesus would come to earth to live among us and give us His life so that those who call on His name as Lord and Savior would be saved.  Who in your path today might the Lord have you share the good news of Jesus?  Or who might you invite to Calvary to join you this weekend?
