INTEGRITY IN OBSCURITY

I have always joked that I wish I had a cool talent. I can’t sing, I’m not a great dancer, I don’t play any instruments, and I still often count on my fingers. Throughout my life, though, I have been reminded by the Lord and good friends that my talents are just a little more “hidden.” I’m more of a background talent kind of girl. What’s interesting about that is that it can be easier to lose integrity in the background of life. When your talents or gifts are out front and center, the integrity of using them well and for the Lord is harder to disguise.

At this point in today’s reading, Joseph is taken to Egypt and sold to Potiphar, yet “the Lord was with Joseph” (v.2). He rises from slave to overseer by faithfully using his talents, even when only the Lord is watching. Joseph’s integrity becomes evident to Potiphar in the simplest daily tasks, and he is rewarded accordingly.

Sin often begins with small compromises—cutting corners, rationalizing shortcuts, and concealing minor details.

Reflection: Guard your character in ordinary, private moments. Practice faithfulness in the small, behind-the-scenes things, and watch the Lord work mightily through your integrity in obscurity.
