HOW GOD DEFINES GOOD
I have a 5-year-old daughter, and if you were to ask what her favorite food is, she would tell you, without hesitation, vanilla milkshakes. If she had her way, she would have a vanilla milkshake at every meal for the rest of her life. But like any parent would do, we sometimes give her one as a treat and other times say, “Not today, sweetheart.” We don’t withhold what she wants because we want to be mean but because we love her. In our wisdom and experience as adults, we know that what she wants is not necessarily good for her.
As hard as it is to hear, our heavenly Father operates in much the same way with us. We are convinced that we know what is best for us and that if God would only give us what we want, then life would be great. But God, in his infinite wisdom, knows that sometimes what we want is not what is, in His judgment, good. Therefore, Romans 8:28 says that God works all things together for our good and then defines the word “good” in the following sentence: that we would be conformed into the image of His Son. The aim of God’s sovereign plan in our lives is not our comfort, wealth, health, or happiness but rather our holiness as we become more like Jesus. That may not be what we most immediately want, but it is what the eternal God of the universe knows is good. He will work everything in our lives into the ultimate project of conforming us to the image of His Son, Jesus!
Final Thought: Thank God for not giving you everything you want but working only for your good.
