Heart Check – July 4, 2023

Devotional written by Pastor Brian Field, Missions Pastor

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Colossians 3:1-4

What holds your attention? What gets you excited? What do you worry about when staring at your ceiling on a sleepless night? Where does your mind go when you are waiting for a friend to show up or finally get some time to yourself? What do you search for on your phone?

In our world, we are surrounded by distractions that battle for our attention. A marketplace of chaos all aimed at turning our time, money, and affections toward something temporal. What we set our focus on indeed is what we end up worshipping. That is what captures our hearts.

Paul’s instructions to the Colossians were to set their hearts on Christ and not be distracted by the world’s hollow promises or temporal worries. They are not what will truly satisfy and will never fill the void or deliver what they promise. Instead, we are to set our hearts on the things above, to the promise of a day when Christ will return and bring all things into their proper place so that we can experience life in eternal glory.

Reflection: Where is your heart set? What has your focus? Ask God to give you a renewed desire toward the things of Him and put aside those that steer your heart away from Him.
