HE IS OUR ABBA, FATHER

To read today: Romans 8:12-17

The Spirit you received does not make you slaves so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him, we cry, “Abba, Father.”

Romans 8:15

When I think about my dad, I think of the blue jeans and white t-shirts he wore every day as he went to work on a house somewhere in the Conejo Valley. As a contractor, he worked long hours, but my dad typically came home stress-free, ready to enjoy dinner with his family, which often erupted in laughter. I think of the sports he taught me, how to change a flat tire or change the oil in my car, and how patient he was in teaching me to drive a stick shift.  Most of all, I remember his enduring strength and how I always felt safe with my dad – that everything would be okay no matter what.  I knew I could go to him for help if I ever needed anything.

In this passage, Paul explains that as God’s adopted children, we can call Him “Father,” and when we need to, we can even cry out to Him, our “Father.”  We have a perfect heavenly Father who desires us to draw close to Him, and He will draw close to us. We are His sons and daughters surrounded by His unconditional, unambiguous, unfailing love.

Final Thought: For today: Have you spent time talking with your heavenly Father and felt His unconditional love for you? Do you need to cry out to Him today about something?
