HE DELIGHTS IN YOU
To read today: 2 Samuel 22:17-20
He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me.
2 Samuel 22:20

David continues his song by celebrating the fact that God took hold of him (v.17), drew him out of deep water (v.17), rescued him from his powerful enemy (v.18), and supported him in his trial (v.19). Then after remembering all of this, David says something that sounds almost too good to be true: God delights in him (v.20). David has a profound understanding that God doesn’t just love him, He likes him. The Lord enjoys spending time with David and hearing his prayers. The same God who thunders from heaven and makes war on the earth also leads him beside still waters and restores his soul (Psalms 23:2-3). The God of the Bible is both infinitely powerful and intimately present, and David experiences both as he cries out to heaven.
Child of God, may I take a moment today to remind you that God delights in you? Whatever you have done, wherever you have been, and however you have failed, our Father in Heaven is not filled with contempt for you but rather compassion and kindness. He created you, formed you in your mother’s womb, and is turning you into His masterpiece by the power of His Spirit (Psalm 139:13, Ephesians 2:10). He is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love (Psalm 103:8). He demonstrated His love in this, that while you were still a sinner, Christ died for you (Romans 5:8). The overwhelming witness of the Bible speaks to a God who is filled with delight in His covenant people. When God repeatedly says that He delights in us, we should take Him at His Word.
For Today: Thank God for His mercy, compassion, kindness, and love!
