To read today:  Psalm 89:3-4, 28, 34-37

You said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to David my servant, ‘I will establish your line forever and make your throne firm through all generations.’”

Psalm 89:3-4

God’s promise to preserve David’s descendants, found in 2 Samuel 7, was that salvation would occur through David’s line through the birth of the Messiah who we know as Jesus Christ. God kept His promise, and David’s line continued. Centuries later, the Messiah was born as a descendant of David (follow the genealogy found in Matthew 1). God’s promise is fulfilled in Jesus Christ who will reign for eternity.

Psalm 89 repeatedly tells us that God won’t fail on his promise. Look at what God said to and about David during his lifetime:

  • “I will maintain my love to him forever and my covenant will never fail.” v.28
  • “I will establish his line forever, his throne as long as the heavens endure.” v.29
  • “I will not violate my covenant.” v.34
  • “I will not lie to David.” v.35
  • “His line will continue forever.” v.36

This is an amazing promise in light of Israel’s continual disobedience throughout history. Yet, even during the nation’s disobedience and punishment, God would never break faith with them. The Messiah arrived just as God promised.

Final thought:  All that God promises, He fulfills. He will not take back even one word of what He says. God can also be trusted to save us as He promised He would. God is completely reliable. Can you name the promises God made to us? Be assured that all that God promises, He fulfills.
