Joseph’s story seemed like a tragedy until he could see the big picture. It was all part of God’s plan to save His family and the entire nation. In the pit, in slavery, and in prison, nothing made sense. Only now could he see God’s faithfulness woven through each chapter of his story. Joseph finally recognized that God had used his suffering to bring salvation to others.

This points directly to Jesus. Joseph’s suffering saved his family from physical death during a famine. Jesus’ suffering saves all who trust in Him from spiritual death and eternal separation from God.

The parallels are remarkable. Joseph was rejected by his brothers, yet he ultimately saved them. Jesus was rejected by His own people, yet He became the Savior of the world. Joseph offered forgiveness that was completely undeserved. Jesus offers forgiveness that no one can ever earn. As followers of Christ, we serve a God who specializes in redemption. He took the suffering of the cross and turned it into salvation for the world.

No matter which chapter you’re in today, remember that God is still writing your story. His plans are good, His timing is perfect, and His purposes will ultimately prevail. The same God who redeemed Joseph from his suffering can redeem yours as well.

Reflection: How can you trust in God’s larger plan right now as you face your current challenges?
