God Loves a Humble Heart
Verses to read: 1 Corinthians 13:1-13
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility, value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
Philippians 2:3-4
1 Corinthians 13:4 tells us, “Love does not envy, it does not boast and it is not proud.” The way of love is to cultivate contentment and humility toward others, regardless of who we are or what we have accomplished.
God has gifted each of us with our unique skills and talents. Sometimes we may take pride in the abilities we have, but we need to remember that those abilities were all given to us by our Savior. We have been made perfect in His image. Scripture continues to tell us not to be boastful. Philippians 2:3-4 states it perfectly when it says, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility, value others above yourself, not looking at your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”
In this passage, Apostle Paul says that God’s desire for us is to treat others with respect, love, and sincerity and to love others before ourselves. We are also told not to be proud. Pride is a destructive trait that can hinder and fracture relationships with others. While pride can halt our spiritual growth, humility can open our lives to more of God’s grace.
I see humility on display daily here at Calvary. We have so many members of our church body that serve humbly. There are people serving at Fresh Market each Tuesday who are humbly serving people in our community that are in need. We have a Care Ministry that humbly cares for those who are struggling. Each week, we have hundreds of volunteers in different ministries that humbly serve our church. For example, every Sunday in Early Childhood, I see our volunteers humbly giving their time and serving young children and their families. These leaders are here week in and week out, serving these little ones with gracious hearts and loving our next generation. They inspire me to serve others with a humble and loving approach.
Today: Seek God with a humble heart and humbly serve someone in need.
