FORGIVENESS CHOOSES GRACE

When Joseph finally revealed his identity, his brothers were terrified, expecting judgment. Instead, they received grace.

Joseph had every reason to seek revenge. His brothers had caused years of suffering and heartbreak, yet he chose forgiveness. Forgiveness did not deny the reality of what happened. Joseph plainly acknowledged their actions. He chose to see God’s greater purpose at work even through his pain.

This is one of the clearest portrayals of Jesus in the entire Old Testament. Joseph was a righteous man who suffered because of others’ sins. He was betrayed, falsely accused, and treated unjustly. When he finally had power over those who had harmed him, he extended mercy rather than judgment.

The same is true of Christ. Like Joseph’s brothers, we stand guilty before Him, yet Jesus offers His grace freely. At the cross, He took upon Himself the punishment we deserved and opened the door to reconciliation with God.

Forgiveness is one of the hardest things God calls us to do. It doesn’t mean pretending the hurt never happened. It means releasing our right to revenge and trusting God with justice. Joseph could forgive because he trusted God’s sovereignty. We can forgive because we have experienced Christ’s forgiveness. Matthew 6:14-15 says that if we are unwilling to forgive, we can’t be forgiven ourselves. This means we have not understood God’s radical forgiveness in our own lives.

Reflection: Is there someone you need to forgive? Release them into God’s hands rather than holding onto resentment. Someone once said that holding a grudge is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die. God wants His children to forgive and be free.
