FOREVER IS A LONG TIME - December 12, 2022

Monday, December 12th

Advent Devotional #16 written by Pastor Shawn Thornton

FOREVER IS A LONG TIME

To read today:  Hebrews 13:5-8

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

Hebrews 13:8

Things change all the time. The seasons change, store layouts change, what’s popular and not popular changes, people change. Nothing stays the same.

As a kid, this works in our favor. As a child, you can’t wait for the next season, the next new show, the next newest and greatest toy. Kids don’t want anything to stay the same; that’s boring. Anything that is new is exciting and fun.

In contrast, the older we get, the more we like life to be predictable. Change scares us, and we crave what is constant, steadfast, and predictable. Yet, a look at our world today shows just the opposite. Our world is so unpredictable. Things are constantly changing. Technology is advancing faster than we can keep up with. Every day, there is a new trend, a new cause to champion, a new technology to learn. Nobody can possibly keep up with everything.

In a world that’s constantly changing, we can feel overwhelmed. The one thing we can cling to in the midst of the change is the fact that Jesus never changes. The verses for today’s reading remind us Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He’s described as “Everlasting.” He has no beginning, and He has no ending. His eternality is an attribute that we can depend on. We may change, but He is does not.

We may be unfaithful, but He is always faithful. People may let us down, but Jesus will never let us down. “…if we are faithless he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.” 2 Timothy 2:13

Because Jesus never changes, the writer of Hebrews tells us that we don’t need to be afraid. No matter what comes our way, Jesus is with us. He walks beside us and won’t leave us alone to face anything that life brings our way.

This holiday season, we can be confident that Jesus is at our side. You may feel more alone than you’ve felt any other holiday season, or you may have more people around this year than any other year. Whichever place you find yourself, know this. Jesus is right there with you in the midst of the chaos and the hustle and bustle.

Today: Thank God that he is ever and always with you, and he won’t ever leave you.
