Filled With Fruit of Righteousness – April 12, 2024

Devotional written by Curtis Johnson, Adult Ministry Pastor

“Filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ – to the glory and praise of God.”
Philippians 1:11

Read Galatians 5:22-23

What is the best purchase you have ever made? Was it a house that appreciated in value, a car or truck that lasted well over a hundred thousand miles, or the cost of tuition that set you up for a valuable career? These examples look to be very good purchases.

Our text today introduces the “fruit of righteousness,” which includes all the character traits flowing from a right relationship with God. There is no way to gain this fruit of righteousness other than through Christ. It can’t be purchased. No deals are available.

The righteousness of God, which is man’s righteousness, does not come by imitation. God, in His holiness and love, provided a way for salvation in which He gets a sinful man right with God Himself; He justifies Him. We accept this salvation through faith. Righteousness is through faith for faith!

Paul is praying for the Philippians and a spiritual harvest in their midst. Consider the fruits of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control) and how they could lead to other’s salvation. They are the fruits that come through Jesus Christ, for we can do nothing apart from Him. It is Christ who, by means of His sacrifice, secured us through faith. And by the power of the Holy Spirit, we can produce fruit, more fruit, much fruit.

For today: Who are you praying for to come to faith in Jesus? How might the Holy Spirit use you to see that happen?
