Expect to Grow

To read today:

Acts 2:14-41

Throughout my life, I have sought to surround myself with colleagues and friends who would challenge me to keep growing. True Christianity never allows any follower of Christ to be comfortable with the status quo of their spiritual lives. Instead, we should all seek to live on the growing edge of life. Healthy disciples of Jesus Christ expect to grow and help other Christ followers grow too.

As Peter concludes His message that looks back at the Old Testament to understand the life and mission of Jesus, the crowd’s response overwhelms expectations. “Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day” (Acts 2:41). On day one of the Church around the world and thus the inaugural day of the local church in Jerusalem, three thousand were added to the small cluster of Jesus’ followers.

The first church was a mega-church from the start, but as fast as it grew big, it sought to function small. Even with thousands, the church expected to grow. Those new believers excitedly shared the reality and message of Christ with others. They believed God would grow His church as they lived and loved like Jesus daily.

Another feature of the growth of the church as a whole is how the members of the church grow. Followers of Christ live on the edge of the constant increase in numbers and spiritual depth. Do you expect your church to grow? Do you wish to grow personally? Do you want others around you who will push you to keep maturing in Christ?

When we live and love like Jesus, sharing His message of hope and love, God will grow His Church and us!
