Elder Candidate: Bill West

Bill West and his wife Christine have been married for nearly 35 years. Both were raised in Southern California. Bill moved from the San Fernando Valley to Westlake Village in 1971 and was in the second graduating class at Westlake High School. Christine grew up in Valencia and then moved to Burbank. Bill graduated from USC with a degree in Finance, while Christine obtained her degree in Marketing from Cal State Northridge. As they launched their careers, coworkers set them up on a blind date, and two years later, they were married.

Early in their faith journey, they were introduced to Jesus through churches their families attended. It wasn’t until they had their first child that they decided to attend church regularly. They grew in their faith, participated in community outreach, and gave their hearts to Jesus. Bill’s career led them to Granite Bay in Northern California, where they poured themselves into a large local church. After nine years, a career change brought the West family back to Westlake Village. They searched for a church that felt like home and found Calvary Community Church.

Bill has worked in the real estate industry for 36 years and is the CEO of Shapell Properties. Christine has been the teaching director for Community Bible Study (CBS) which meets at Calvary for the last eight years. They have three adult children: Lindsey (31); Nick (30) and his wife, Emily, live in San Diego; and Matt (25) and his wife, Brooke just moved to Denver.

Being members at Calvary for 12 years has provided amazing opportunities for drawing closer to Christ through their baptisms, leading a small group for six years, and volunteering for mission trips.

Bill looks forward to how God can further use him at Calvary, knowing that “…Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required…” Luke 12:48

Elder Board Process

Calvary Community Church is governed by a Board of Elders. They are a group of biblically-qualified men who are selected to oversee the ministry and teaching of the church. The role of an Elder is to search God’s Word, seek God’s face, pray and fast together in order to guard and guide the church.

To become an Elder, names of potential candidates are submitted by staff, church leaders and members of the Calvary family. The names are screened for qualifications listed in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9, plus leadership, previous involvement at and commitment to Calvary, and the ability to work with others. Screened candidates are then interviewed and final candidates are invited to attend Elder meetings on a trial basis.

After the trial period, the Elder candidate is presented to the Calvary Family for comments. Upon review of the comments and unanimous consent of the serving Elders, the Elder candidate will immediately begin serving on the Board of Elders. Calvary’s current Elder Board candidate is Bill West. For a list of Calvary’s current elders, go to calvarywestlake.org/senior-leadership.
