Death is Defeated – We Have HOPE! – April 2, 2024

Devotional written by Rrachel Fitzpatrick, Outreach Director

When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.” “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.”
1 Corinthians 15:53-56

Read Mark 12:27

Death is a hard fact of our life here on earth. Some might say death is our enemy. It robs us of time with our loved ones. We were not made for death but for life. God is not the God of the dead but the living (Mark 12:27).

We can have hope and confidence in the fact that Jesus conquered death. Again, this is a mystery, a truth so profound it transcends the capacities of human reason. Scripture repeatedly proclaims in praise and thanksgiving that through His death, Jesus conquered death, and in so doing, he has opened the doors of eternal life to those who once were estranged from God.

Over the last four years, we have lived through a pandemic, witnessed a divided country due to heightened political tensions, experienced war on foreign soil, and sadly, seen children caught in the middle. Death seems to spread like a thick blanket across the world. It’s played out “real-time” with increased social media platforms and “live streaming.”

Fear spreads like wildfire, and we grieve those we’ve lost. Yet even as we mourn, we have hope. We can view death as our enemy, but we know death is defeated.

Reflection: Today, reread one of the Gospels, which testifies not just to a memory or vision of Jesus after His crucifixion but also to an empty tomb. Jesus truly died and rose again.
