COMMITMENT TO GOD’S WAYS
To read today: 1 Kings 2:1-10
When the time drew near for David to die, he gave a charge to Solomon his son: “I am about to go the way of all the earth,” he said. “So be strong, act like a man, and observe what the Lord your God requires: Walk in obedience to him, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and regulations, as written in the Law of Moses. Do this so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go.”
1 Kings 2:1-3

David’s final words to Solomon reflect the heart of a godly parent. He emphasizes the importance of obedience to God’s commands as the foundation for success. Commitment to God marked David’s life, and now he imparts this wisdom to his son. David’s words also reveal the heart of a godly leader. He understood that a righteous ruler who leads with reverence for God brings blessings and refreshment to the people. So, whether we have children or not, our pursuit of God’s commands should be exemplified to all who see us.
David’s reign was characterized by moments of triumph and struggle. He made grave mistakes but also sought God with a repentant heart. God called him a man after His own heart (1 Samuel 13:14) because David’s deep love for God was evident in his devotion and willingness to obey.
Final thought: Pray that the Lord would give you a heart similar to David’s. May we be committed to living according to God’s Word, trusting that in doing so, we will bring God glory.
