BEARING THE COST
It is easy to assume that running from sin means we don’t pay a price. The story of Joseph proves otherwise. Often, being decisive in avoiding sin still means our lives and reputations can be tainted. I think of parenthood and the many times I made decisions I knew were right for my family, only to be judged or met with anger for making them. I also think back to friendships lost, relationships ended, and promotions withheld because of my refusal to enter into sin. The point is, sometimes not sinning still comes at a cost.
In today’s passage, we see Joseph flee from Potiphar’s wife, refusing to return for his cloak, which cost him his freedom. I imagine that in that moment, he was poised to defend his actions and fight to preserve his reputation and well-earned favor. Instead, Joseph fled quickly and suffered greatly for it.
Sin often demands payment. Immediate relief may be tempting, but escape preserves long-term integrity. Never bargain with sin to protect your reputation or for comfort’s sake. Always choose the harder short-term loss over long-term spiritual compromise.
Prayer: Lord, give me the courage to bear the losses that come from choosing righteousness. Amen.
