ANTIDOTE TO JEALOUSY

To read today:  Hebrews 12:1-3

For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Hebrews 12: 2b

Deep issues take time to fix. Yesterday we considered the root of jealousy – a lack of knowing and believing what God says about us to be true. Telling someone to “believe harder” can be as effective as saying, “Just calm down.” What can we do while we process this journey of genuinely believing what God says?

Hebrews 12:1-3 gives us a glimpse into the thoughts of Jesus as He endured the cross. “For the joy set before him,” it says. What joy? He was betrayed by friends and family and murdered as an innocent man. Where is the joy? As we learn to live and love like Jesus, we must recognize that Jesus exemplifies joy in giving. He didn’t just give some money to the poor he gave His life for the poor in spirit. The cross is not just a symbol of the grace and mercy poured out onto us from the Father – which it is – but also abundant generosity. The antidote to jealousy can be found in Jesus’ defining moment. The antidote to jealousy is abundant generosity.

Reflection: List five ways Jesus has shown you abundant generosity this week. Then, list five ways you can show abundant generosity to others in the coming week.
