“So, he got up and went to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.”

A FATHER WHO RUNS

The prodigal son turned and took the first step back toward his father. Don’t you think he was scared to death? He was probably wondering what his father would say. Will he take me back into the family? Step by humiliating step, he had to wonder what his father would do. As a father, I picture him waiting day after day, looking out the window, wondering whether his son was alive. I can even hear him asking for a miracle and waiting for it.

The Bible says the father saw the son while he was still a long way off. He saw the son before the son saw him! His heart probably leaped out of his chest, leaving him breathless. Tears must have spilled onto his face. He had to be wrecked, but he ran! He ran to meet his lost son! The passage says he threw his arms around him and kissed him. The Hebrew word suggests he smothered him with kisses. This is such a beautiful picture of a father’s love. No “I told you so.” No condemnation. Just unconditional love.

Final Thought: How long has God been waiting for you? Jesus says, “Come to me, and I’ll give you rest.” He promises peace and eternal life.
