NOTICE THE DISTANCE

Our family is just coming out of the 18-year whirlwind of child-rearing. My oldest just left for her freshman year of college out of state, and my youngest got his driver’s license the same week. Suddenly, what was chaotic is quiet. In the quiet, the Lord is opening my heart and mind to pockets of my family I have allowed to grow distant in the business of life.

In today’s passage, the woman recognizes that someone important is missing. She does not dismiss the longing in her heart. She acknowledges the distance and lets it move her to action. Sometimes we become so accustomed to the distance, both emotional and physical, that we stop noticing it. A busy schedule, unresolved conflict, hurt feelings, or years of silence can create separation.

Today, ask God to show you which family relationships need your attention. Pursuing them begins with caring enough to notice.

Reflection: This week, think about a family member who may be on your heart. Is there a relationship you have quietly accepted as distant? Write the name of the family member you want to reconnect with, then pray for them by name.

Prayer: Lord, help me notice the relationships that need my love and attention. Give me compassion for my family members and the courage to respond to the concerns You place on my heart. Amen.
