WHEN THE FUN RUNS OUT
Eventually, The Bill Comes Due
At first, everything probably seemed amazing. The son had money, freedom, adventure, and the friends his wealth attracted. Then Jesus says: “He had spent everything.” Eventually, the resources ran out. This is an important picture of sin. Sin often offers short-term enjoyment while hiding the long-term cost. Eventually, the bill comes due.
Temptation says, “Think about how this will feel right now.” Wisdom cautions, “Where will this road eventually take me?”
Some decisions promise “freedom” today but create chains tomorrow. Some habits seem harmless today but become addictions tomorrow. Some compromises seem small today but pull the rug out from under us tomorrow.
The bill doesn’t always arrive immediately, but it eventually does.
Something happens that the son cannot control: a famine hits.
Hard seasons reveal what our lives are truly built on. If my peace depends on circumstances, what happens when they change? If my identity depends on people’s approval, what happens when they reject me? If my happiness depends on success, what happens when I fail? If my security depends on possessions, what happens when they disappear?
Next Step:
Instead of simply asking God to remove every difficult circumstance, we should sometimes ask, “God, what is this revealing in me?” Difficulty can expose false foundations we didn’t realize we were standing on. That exposure can be grace. God may use the emptiness of something temporary to remind us that we were created for something eternal.
Ask God today: “What am I depending on more than You?” Sit quietly with that question, and surrender whatever comes to mind.
