“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves… In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.”

RIGHT-SIZING OURSELVES

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to get so wrapped up in your own world that you forget there’s an entire world beyond it?

I think back to high school. At the time, it felt like everything in that world was so important. There were groups, cliques, and plenty of daily drama. In that little microcosm of life, everything felt so important. And then one day… it was over.

Everyone graduated and immediately went in different directions. People went to different colleges, started jobs, moved to new places, and stepped into new seasons of their lives. But here’s what I find interesting. I often create new versions of the same thing. My workplace can become my own little world. So can my neighborhood, my friend group, or my family. At times, I fool myself into believing that my position, opinion, success, or recognition is the most important thing. But Jesus shows us a completely different way.

I don’t need to prove anything, but I do need to live out my purpose.

As I live out my purpose, I also need to consider how Jesus lived. What was Jesus’ mindset? The most important person who ever walked the earth never acted as if He were the most important in the room. The Creator became a servant. The King washed feet. The One who deserved all glory chose humility.

A right-sized life does not mean thinking less of our lives. We each matter deeply to God. It means remembering that God has not called us to spend our lives proving our importance. He has called us to love others. I cannot control whether others choose pride or humility. I am only responsible for my own heart. Imagine how different our homes, churches, workplaces, and relationships would be if we approached each moment every day with the heart posture of “how can I love and serve like Jesus?”

Application: Where am I spending energy trying to prove my importance instead of using my influence to serve others?

Prayer: Jesus, give me Your attitude. Help me remember that You had all power yet chose humility. Teach me to stop comparing and striving and to start loving the people around me the way You love me. Amen.
