RIGHT-SIZING GOD’S POWER
Have you ever paused to consider the power hidden in the world God created? For most of human history, people looked up at the Sun and knew it was big and powerful. They could feel its warmth and see its light. They knew it was enormous and hot. Our Sun is so large that about 1.3 million Earths could fit inside it.
Comedian Nate Bargatze tells a story about his six-year-old daughter, who asks, “Dad, why is the sun hot?”
He replies confidently, “That’s easy. The sun is hot because it’s on fire.”
It turns out that’s not quite right.
Deep inside the Sun, hydrogen atoms are being fused together into helium. During that process, a tiny fraction of the Sun’s mass is converted directly into energy. Albert Einstein described this with one of the most famous equations ever written:
E = mc²
Energy equals mass multiplied by the speed of light squared.
In other words, there is an unbelievable amount of energy hidden inside the matter God created. Every second, the Sun converts about four million tons of its mass into pure energy. The energy released every second is roughly equivalent to more than 100 billion atomic bombs exploding every second. Every. Single. Second. And that’s just our Sun.
If you look toward the constellation Orion, you’ll find a star named Betelgeuse. It is so enormous that hundreds of millions of our Suns could fit inside it. And Betelgeuse is just one star. Astronomers estimate there are between 100 and 400 billion stars in our Milky Way galaxy. And the Milky Way is just one galaxy among an estimated two trillion galaxies in the observable universe. It’s almost impossible for my mind to grasp that size. And then the Bible tells us that Jesus sustains every bit of it.
Colossians 1 says,
“All things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”
Everything, from the smallest atom to the largest galaxy, has been made and continues to be held together because of Jesus.
Isaiah gives us another breathtaking picture as he writes:
“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of His glory.” (Isaiah 6:3)
The Hebrew word for glory is “kavod.” It literally means weight, heaviness, significance. The universe is saturated with the significance of God.
Every atom. Every beam of light. Every star. Every galaxy. Everything in creation points beyond itself to the greatness of its Creator. And here’s what amazes me most: the One who holds together trillions of galaxies is the very same One who holds together my life.
The God who keeps Betelgeuse burning…
The God who keeps every atom from flying apart…
The God who sustains the universe with unimaginable power…
…Is not overwhelmed by anything we bring to Him.
A right-sized life begins with a right-sized view of God. When God becomes bigger in our eyes, our problems become smaller in comparison. Nothing is too heavy for the God whose kavod, whose glory and significance, fills the entire universe.
Application: What am I trying to carry that I need to trust God to hold?
Prayer: Jesus, remind me that You are the One who holds all things together. The stars are not too big for You, and my struggles are not too small for You. Help me live today in awe of Your power and trust in Your love. Amen.
