THE PRESENCE OF JESUS

Over the past few days, we’ve reflected on His authority, His mission, His family, and His way. We’ve seen that Jesus holds all authority in heaven and on earth. We’ve been called to make disciples, baptize believers, and teach others to obey everything He has commanded.

Then, in today’s passage, Jesus closes with a promise: “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

As we conclude our journey through the Great Commission, I find it fascinating how Jesus frames this passage. He begins with His authority and ends with His presence. The Alpha and the Omega. The beginning and the end. The One with all authority and the One who is always present.

Don’t you see it? Our commission and purpose as Christ followers rests in the middle of those two realities:

  1. Jesus has all authority (omnipotent).
  2. Jesus is with you always (omnipresent).

Imagine if He had only said,
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Now go.” That would certainly remind us that Jesus is King, but it would leave us in a clumsy, unsupported spot as we go. Or the opposite: imagine if Jesus had only said, “I am with you always. Go.” Now we have companionship, but no authority or protection. Instead, Jesus gives us both.

That’s why I love this passage. The Great Commission is framed by Christology (who Jesus is), not anthropology (who I am). Perhaps the greatest temptation in discipleship is to make the mission about us. Our gifting. Our knowledge. Our personality. Our influence. Our strength. But the Great Commission was never meant to rest on our shoulders alone. It rests on Christ’s. The question has never been, “Am I enough?” The question has always been, “Is He enough?” And the Great Commission answers with a resounding yes.

Dear saints, let’s go make disciples! We are commissioned! As we go, let’s stay rooted in His authority and sustained by His presence.

Reflection Questions:

  • Where do I need to trust in God’s presence more than in my own understanding?
  • What fear or uncertainty keeps me from walking boldly in obedience?
  • How would my life change if I truly believed Jesus is with me right now?
